   Technology, Context Awareness ______________________________________________________

With the ever more rapid integration of mobile technology into our everyday lives we are also seeing the development of new applications to complement it. Mobile devices are no longer seen simply as a communication device, but soon they will take on the role of versatile, networked terminals enabling users to communicate multimodally as well as access Internet services, play games and access a wide range of multimedia content. From a technological perspective, the difference with respect to traditional PC and TV based applications will be that it is no longer clear where, when and how users will make use of such services. Many situational factors can play a role in how the they should be provided. The scenario is further complicated by the inherently dynamic nature of mobile communication and services. Users and providers alike have to contend with rapidly varying bandwidth, load on terminals and so on. There is, therefore, more need than ever before for context aware services and applications which are able to adapt dynamically to changing service provision conditions.
Context awareness is used in DANAE to dynamically provide usage constraints, employed by service providers to utilize networks and terminals more efficiently by means of . The context defined within the project is largely based on a subset of the MPEG-21 Usage Environment Description (UED). The context collection mechanism is currently under specification and will be developed throughout the lifetime of the project.
